If susceptible humans under various forms of stress react by engaging in various compulsive behaviors related to their own species — typical orientations of grooming, exercising caution, gathering, and (arguably) hunting, why not dogs too? Dogs are self-groomers, predators, and imbibers (to name but a few of their naturalistic behaviors). Even from the drawing board one might expect some dogs to groom themselves compulsively when stressed: and they do. And you might expect others to compulsively chase things that are or are not there: they do this too. Or to drink water excessively when there is no known medical cause: they do. There are other conditions in dogs and across other domestic species that appear to confirm the view that compulsive behaviors are not unique to human beings but are also exhibited by animals.
